How to rank your restaurant on Google Maps

A step-by-step guide to optimising your Google Business Profile listing and appearing in the top 3 of the local map. Proven strategies for restaurants.

46% of Google searches have local intent. If your restaurant does not appear on Google Maps when someone searches "restaurant near me" or "where to eat in [your neighbourhood]", you are losing customers every day. This guide shows you, step by step, how to rank your restaurant on the map.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile listing

If you have not claimed your listing yet, go to business.google.com and follow the verification process. Google will send you a postcard with a code, or verify you by phone. Without verification, you cannot edit your listing or reply to reviews.

✓ Use the exact name of your business (do not add keywords such as "best restaurant")
✓ The address must match your website and other directories exactly
✓ Add your local phone number, not a switchboard or a virtual number

Step 2: Complete your listing to 100%

A complete listing ranks significantly better than an incomplete one. Google rewards information that is useful to the user. Every field you leave empty is a missed opportunity.

✓ Primary category: choose the most specific one (e.g. "Italian restaurant", not just "Restaurant")
✓ Secondary categories: add 2-4 relevant ones (e.g. "Pizzeria", "Restaurant with a terrace")
✓ Hours: keep them up to date, including public holidays
✓ Attributes: tick every one that applies (Wi-Fi, accessible, pet-friendly, reservations)
✓ Description: 750 characters with natural keywords and what sets you apart
✓ Menu: link to your up-to-date online menu

Step 3: Quality photos — lots of them, and often

Businesses with more than 100 photos receive 520% more calls and 2,717% more direction requests. Upload photos regularly: dishes, interior, team, events.

✓ Upload at least 3 new photos a week
✓ Dish photos: natural light, a 45-degree angle, a clean background
✓ Include exterior photos so customers recognise your premises
✓ Geotag the photos before you upload them
✓ Reply to the photos customers upload

Step 4: Get and manage reviews

Reviews are the most powerful conversion factor. Google uses them as a ranking signal, and customers read them before they decide. You need a steady flow of new reviews.

✓ Ask for a review at the right moment: after a positive comment from the guest
✓ Create a direct link for leaving a review and put it on a QR code on the table
✓ Reply to ALL reviews in under 24 hours
✓ Negative reviews: thank them, apologise and offer a solution offline
✓ Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange

Step 5: Publish content regularly

Google Business Profile lets you publish updates, offers and events. Businesses that publish regularly keep their listing active and relevant to Google.

✓ Publish at least 1 time a week: dish of the day, an event, something new
✓ Use an attractive photo in every post
✓ Include a call to action: "Book now", "See the menu", "Call"
✓ Promote special events: Valentine's Day, Christmas, local festivals

Step 6: Build citations in directories

Citations (mentions of your business on other websites) reinforce Google's trust in your business. NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone) is key.

✓ Register on: TripAdvisor, TheFork, Yelp, Páginas Amarillas, 11870
✓ Make sure the name, address and phone number are IDENTICAL on every site
✓ Local food directories in your city
✓ Tourism guides and city-council websites

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a restaurant to rank on Google Maps?

With a well-optimised listing and a steady flow of reviews, you can see improvements in 2-4 weeks. For the top 3 in competitive areas, it takes 3-6 months of consistent work.

Can I rank my restaurant on Google Maps without a website?

Yes. Google Business Profile works independently of your website. Having an optimised website does strengthen your ranking, though, and it lets you capture extra traffic.

How many reviews do I need to rank well?

There is no magic number, but as a rule you need more reviews than your direct competition. If the top restaurants in your area have 200 reviews, aim to beat that figure. Frequency matters as much as volume.
