The real challenge of local SEO for restaurants

Restaurant SEO is the work that gets your business onto Google Maps and into local search when someone looks for where to eat nearby. At GastroSEO we do local SEO, hyperlocal SEO and GEO (so that ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity recommend you) for restaurants, bars, cafés, catering and hotels, from 350 €/month with no lock-in. It does not include web design, paid campaigns or photography: each service is hired separately.

Who this service is for

✓ Restaurants that want to show up on Google Maps when someone searches their kind of food in their city.
✓ Tapas bars and neighbourhood bars that depend on nearby footfall and "near me" searches.
✓ Speciality cafés competing for visibility in areas with a high density of venues.
✓ Caterers and event companies that need to rank for service searches in their area.
✓ Hotels with a restaurant open to the public that want local diners, not only guests.
✓ Pastry shops and bakeries with direct sales that want to stand out by product and area.
✓ Dark kitchens and delivery brands that need a listing and a website that build trust without a street-front shop.
✓ Businesses that already have a website but do not appear on Google Maps or do not get direct bookings.

What restaurant SEO is, and what local SEO includes

Restaurant SEO, or search visibility for hospitality, is the work that gets your business onto Google and Google Maps when someone looks for where to eat nearby, in your city or in your neighbourhood. At GastroSEO we work three layers that fit together: local SEO, hyperlocal SEO and GEO. According to the INE (DIRCE, 1 January 2025), Spain has 270.205 food and drink premises; you are not competing with all of them, only with the ones visible in your area and for your kind of food. For the basic idea, read what local SEO is, explained without jargon.

Local SEO is about showing up on Google Maps and for searches such as "restaurant + city", "restaurant + neighbourhood" or "near me". It includes optimising the Google listing (Business Profile), a website with local pages, reviews and directory citations. Hyperlocal SEO goes one step further: owning the street, the neighbourhood, the station or the shopping centre with area content and signals on the site and the listing, such as landmarks, how to get there, parking and real opening hours. GEO is the newest layer: ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity recommending your restaurant when someone asks "where to eat in Gràcia". For that we work on structured content, clear facts and text an AI can cite; we have a specific service for visibility in AI assistants.

How Google decides which restaurants to show on Google Maps: relevance, distance and prominence

Google orders local results on Google Maps from three main factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Google's Business Profile Help (Tips to improve your local ranking on Google) puts it this way: "Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance and prominence." Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for; distance is how far each business is from the customer; and prominence is how well known a business is. Those three factors decide who enters the local pack, the three map results Google shows above the organic results. Of the three, we can only work on relevance and prominence; distance depends on where the user is, not on your website.

Distance cannot be changed, but relevance can offset it. For a neighbourhood venue, every street and every landmark counts: if people search "terrace in the Casco Viejo", a page that explains your location, the metro exits and the parking helps Google understand that your offer matches that search. For a restaurant in the centre, a short distance works in your favour, but there are more options; that is why it pays to strengthen the area pages and the "how to get there" signals that set your venue apart from others nearby. Neighbourhood pages and nearby landmarks do not move where you are, but they do improve the relevance Google assigns to your listing.

Relevance is also built from concrete listing attributes: type of food, services, payment options and accessibility. Someone searching "Italian restaurant with a terrace in Ruzafa" gets a better match if the listing has the right category, the terrace attribute and a description that agrees with the website. That is why each month we review the listing and the local pages together, so Google does not have to choose between contradictory facts.

Google also states that "businesses that provide complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results", and that reviews weigh in that calculation: we come back to them below, with the quote. That is why, on the GastroSEO Plan, we spend time each month completing the listing, publishing local content and doing basic review care. You cannot pay to appear first: "You cannot request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." No monthly fee buys a position on the map. What you hire is the work on the signals Google can actually read.

Our work is about giving Google the signals it can process: a complete, active listing, a website with local pages and structured data, real reviews and consistent citations. Professional listing management is covered in Google Business Pro.

What we work on each month in the GastroSEO Plan

The GastroSEO Plan is a monthly local SEO service for restaurants that includes ongoing work on the Google listing, the website, the content, the reviews and the citations. It is not a one-off setup: each month we spend hours maintaining and improving the signals Google uses to decide who to show on Google Maps and in local organic results. Below, the table of work areas, what we do, what we measure and how often.

The Google listing is the shop window people look at most

The Google listing, also called a Google Business Profile, is the first point of contact between your restaurant and someone looking for where to eat on Google Maps. That is why we work on it properly: the right categories, attributes (terrace, accessible, takeaway, bookings), real photos, questions and answers, an up-to-date menu and a direct booking button. A complete, active listing gives Google signals of relevance and prominence.

On the GastroSEO Plan we handle the monthly optimisation of the listing: categories, attributes, description, photos, menu and booking button. If you want management with weekly photo posts, review replies within 24 hours, a review-request strategy and protection against outside edits, Google Business Pro is the right option. Both services work on the same listing, at a different level of attention.

The listing does not replace the website: Google shows the listing for nearby searches, but the website is where someone decides whether to book, look at the menu or ask for directions. That is why local SEO uses both.

The restaurant website is the base of local SEO

Your restaurant website is the base local SEO stands on. Google needs pages with local content, restaurant structured data and an acceptable load speed to rank you for searches such as "Italian restaurant in Chamberí" or "where to eat near the station". If your site already exists on Wix or WordPress, we work on it; if it starts from zero, we build it with Astro, a light and fast technology.

On the website we work three fronts: pages by area and by occasion (for example, one page for the neighbourhood, another for a group menu, another for the terrace), the menu as an HTML page and not as a PDF, and restaurant structured data so Google understands your offer. Speed matters: according to Google (web.dev), the "good" Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP ≤ 2.5 s, INP ≤ 200 ms and CLS ≤ 0.1. A slow site falls outside the thresholds Google treats as good and can affect ranking.

When the menu is an HTML page, Google can read each dish, its description, the price, the allergens and the categories (starters, rice dishes, desserts, the set lunch). That lets the site answer specific searches such as "seafood paella in Seville" with content that can be indexed. A scanned PDF does not offer that detail: Google cannot reliably read the text in an image, and relevance signals are lost. An HTML menu also fits the phone, can be updated without breaking links, and can include links to the booking or the listing. Restaurant structured data gives Google information it does not have to guess from the text: type of food, price range, hours, whether you take bookings, services and location.

Local pages are not filler: each one answers a specific nearby search and links to the listing and the area. For example, a page "terrace in central Bilbao" can show terrace hours, how to get there, which dishes are served and a prompt to book. When Google crawls the site, it finds a clear relationship between the venue, its area and its offer.

If you need a new website or a redesign, our web design for restaurants service handles the whole project. For the words that sell, we have menu and website copy. And if you want to know what makes a restaurant website work, read our article what makes a restaurant website successful.

Reviews and reputation: how to ask, how to reply, and why they count

Reviews are one of the prominence signals Google describes in its help. Google says it clearly: "The more reviews and positive ratings a business has, the better its local ranking." Inside the monthly plan we do basic review care: tracking new reviews and guidance on how to ask for them and reply. Systematic requests and professional replies within 24 hours are hired with Google Business Pro.

Asking has a method. The moment is at the till, while the experience is fresh; the channel is a QR code on the table or the receipt with a direct link to your listing, or a message the next day if there was a booking; and the rule is always real customers and no incentives, because Google does not allow bought reviews. Replying has its own method: every review gets a reply, naming the dish or the occasion the customer mentions, with no templates; and when the review is negative, with a concrete fix and the conversation taken off Google. A review with text describes the dish, the occasion and the area; a rating with no comment says none of that, either to Google or to the next customer, who does read the replies. In the monthly report you will see how many new reviews came in, the average rating and the reply rate. Basic care on the GastroSEO Plan covers tracking and guidance; professional replies within 24 hours and systematic requests belong to Google Business Pro.

Local SEO for all of hospitality, in any city

Local SEO is not only for white-tablecloth restaurants. It works for any hospitality business that depends on people searching nearby: bars, cafés, catering, hotels with a restaurant, pastry shops and dark kitchens. The mechanics are the same — listing, website, reviews, local content — but each kind of business has its own searches and attributes.

Tapas bar or neighbourhood bar

Searches such as "tapas bar in Malasaña" or "where to eat tapas nearby" depend on the listing, terrace and hours attributes, and recent reviews. We work on the neighbourhood page and the listing attributes that answer those searches. More in SEO for bars.

Neighbourhood or speciality café

For a café, the competition is the next street. Hyperlocal SEO, with references to the area, real hours and photos of the venue, is what makes the difference. More in SEO for cafés.

Catering and events

A caterer competes for service searches in its area, not for footfall. It needs pages by type of event and a listing with delivery-service attributes. More in SEO for catering.

Hotel with a restaurant open to the public

When a hotel's listing and website only talk about rooms, the restaurant stays invisible to anyone looking for where to eat in the area. We create a specific restaurant page and optimise the listing for dining searches. The specific service is local SEO for hotels.

Pastry shop or bakery with direct sales

Searches such as "gluten-free pastry shop in Seville" or "birthday cake nearby" need product content and collection attributes. We create pages by product type and optimise the listing for collection at the bakery, with real photos and direct-sales hours.

Dark kitchen or delivery brand

With no street-front shop, the listing and the website are the only shop window. We build trust with reviews, real photos and area pages; for a brand that sells only through apps, we set up a product page and a listing with delivery attributes, and we leave the flow in place to ask repeat customers for reviews.

It does not matter which city you are in: we do local SEO across Spain. See our local SEO by city page for how we apply it to your area.

What local SEO costs for a restaurant

If you would rather start with a diagnosis, the Local SEO Audit Pro costs 290 € as a one-off, fully credited if you hire the GastroSEO Plan within the next 30 days; and if what you need is intensive listing management, Google Business Pro costs 650 €/month. We publish closed prices because a local SEO service should be comparable, with no small print.

Google Business Pro650 €/monthBusinesses that want intensive listing and review management.Full listing management, review replies within 24 hours, weekly posts, review strategy, metrics report, protection against edits.

Besides the monthly plans, we have closed-price services that combine a website, local SEO and advertising: Website + Local Launch (2.490 € one-off) includes a professional website, the audit and 3 months of the GastroSEO Plan; Website + Google Maps (3.290 € one-off) includes a website, the audit and 3 months of Google Business Pro; and Ads + Local SEO (690 €/month) combines campaign management and local SEO, with the ad spend separate, on the client's own accounts. You can see every pack on closed-price packs.

No monthly plan includes a new website: the website is hired separately, or inside the Website + Local Launch and Website + Google Maps packs. They also do not include paid campaigns (that is advertising), photography (the shoot is hired separately) or the ad spend, which always sits on accounts in your name. Every monthly plan has no lock-in: you can leave whenever you want.

How it is measured, and what you will see in the monthly report

The monthly report on the GastroSEO Plan includes the metrics that matter for a restaurant: views and actions on the Google listing (calls, directions, website visits, bookings), positions in the local searches you care about, new reviews and average rating, and organic traffic and conversions on the website. We do not measure positions alone: we measure whether people find you and act.

The report is organised in blocks. The first tracks how the listing is moving; it tells you whether the listing is turning searches into actions, and whether photos, the description or the booking button need adjusting. The second shows positions in the local searches being watched; it tells you which local pages to strengthen, and which are getting impressions but not clicks. The third groups new reviews and the average rating; it tells you how to adjust review care and spot signals from the dining room. The fourth connects organic traffic with website conversions; it checks whether visibility is turning into bookings, calls and forms. Each block ends with a concrete action for the next month, not with a list of numbers.

Content decisions rest on Search Console and on the searches Google shows on the listing. If a search such as "restaurant near Sants station" shows impressions, we create a page or a block for that intent; if a page gets clicks but not conversions, we review its call to action, the menu or the contact details.

There are two different rhythms. The Google listing responds quickly to changes: when you complete categories, attributes, photos and posts, Google processes that information fast, and the change shows up sooner in listing metrics than in organic positions, which need continuity in content and prominence. We do not promise deadlines, because Google does not guarantee them, but each month we show you what has changed and what we are doing about it.

The report is not a PDF that gets filed: it is the base of the next round. If a local page gets no impressions, we review it; if a search gains relevance, we create specific content. That is how local SEO works as an ongoing service.

Local SEO, paid advertising and booking platforms: they complement each other

Local SEO, paid advertising and booking platforms do different jobs and complement each other. Advertising on Google Ads or Meta Ads brings customers while SEO matures; that is why we offer Ads + Local SEO, with the ad spend always on accounts in the client's name. Platforms such as TheFork or delivery apps bring customers, but they charge a commission and keep the customer data. The Google listing and your website are the only channels you own: direct bookings arrive with no intermediary, no commission and no cost per click.

According to the 2025 yearbook of hospitality in Spain, restaurant turnover rose 3.1% up to September 2025 compared with the previous year, but profitability fell 0.9%. Every customer who arrives with no platform commission and no cost per click supports that margin.

How we combine SEO and advertising is explained in advertising for restaurants. The kind of projects we do is in websites we have already published, and how we work is on the agency page. When you are ready, ask for the Local SEO Audit Pro on the contact form: we deliver the 90-day plan.

Common questions about local SEO for restaurants

What is local SEO for restaurants?

Local SEO for restaurants is the ranking work that gets your business onto Google Maps and into nearby searches, such as "Italian restaurant in Chamberí" or "where to eat nearby". It combines optimising the Google listing, a website with local pages, reviews and directory citations. The aim is that people looking for where to eat in your area find you, not the competition.

How much does local SEO cost for a restaurant?

You have three options. The Local SEO Audit Pro costs 290 € as a one-off and is fully credited if you hire the GastroSEO Plan within the next 30 days. The GastroSEO Plan costs 350 €/month with no lock-in. For intensive listing management, Google Business Pro costs 650 €/month with no lock-in. There are also combined packs: Website + Local Launch for 2.490 € and Ads + Local SEO for 690 €/month. No monthly plan includes a new website, paid advertising or photography.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

We do not give deadlines, because the pace does not depend only on us. What depends on the restaurant is consistency: publishing photos, replying to reviews and producing content regularly. What depends on Google is processing: changes to the listing show up sooner than organic positions, which need continuity before they settle. That is why we measure every month in the report: what has moved, which signals have improved, and which actions to keep or adjust. You decide from the data, not from promises.

Do I need a website for local SEO, or is the Google listing enough?

The Google listing is essential, but it is not enough. Google shows the listing for nearby searches, but the website is where someone decides whether to book, look at the menu or ask for directions. Local pages on the site also let you rank for searches the listing does not cover, such as "group menu in Ruzafa" or "restaurant for events in Bilbao's Casco Viejo". That is why local SEO uses both: the listing to be found, and the website to convert.

What is the difference between the GastroSEO Plan and Google Business Pro?

The GastroSEO Plan (350 €/month) includes monthly on-page local SEO, Google listing optimisation, local content, basic review care, a monthly report and WhatsApp support. Google Business Pro (650 €/month) focuses on full listing management: professional review replies within 24 hours, weekly posts with photos, a review-request strategy, a listing metrics report and protection against outside edits. You can hire one or the other depending on how much attention the listing needs.

Is there a lock-in, or a penalty for leaving?

No lock-in: you can leave whenever you want. The Google listing is in your name and stays yours, with everything already done. If you hire the Local SEO Audit Pro and then do not want to continue, the report and the 90-day action plan are yours. Each month you decide whether we carry on, with the report in hand.

Does local SEO work for bars, cafés, catering or hotels?

Yes. Local SEO works for any hospitality business that depends on people searching nearby: tapas bars, neighbourhood cafés, catering and events, hotels with a restaurant open to the public, pastry shops and dark kitchens. The mechanics are the same — listing, website, reviews, local content — but each kind of business has its own searches and attributes, and we adapt the strategy to them. A bar in Ruzafa does not compete for the same searches as a hotel next to Valencia station.

Can local SEO get ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend my restaurant?

Yes. That layer is what we call GEO. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity rely on structured content, clear facts and authority signals when they recommend restaurants. If your listing is complete, your site has structured data and your content can be cited, you raise the chances that they mention you when someone asks "where to eat tonight in central Seville". We have a specific service for ranking in AI assistants.
